Personal Insight

After years of stumbling through awkward boundary conversations, I discovered something important: simplicity works best. I used to over-explain and apologize profusely when setting boundaries, which ironically led to more resistance and negotiation.

The turning point came when I learned to express boundaries clearly and confidently, without excessive justification. One client shifted a difficult workplace dynamic with a single, clear statement: “I’m available for work communications between 9am-6pm on weekdays. Outside those hours, I’ll respond the next business day.”

What surprised me most was that clear, direct boundaries actually led to more respect, not less. People responded better to straightforward communication that didn’t invite debate or negotiation. The clarity was actually a gift to everyone involved.
