The Science Behind It
Our bodies are designed with natural cycles of activity and restoration. Research in chronobiology shows that we have ultradian rhythms—90-120 minute cycles throughout the day where our bodies and brains naturally shift between higher and lower energy states. These rhythms regulate our alertness, cognitive function, and physical energy.
When we consistently override these natural cycles, our stress hormones (particularly cortisol) remain elevated, leading to chronic stress, decreased immune function, impaired cognitive performance, and disrupted sleep. Conversely, honoring these rhythms by responding to fatigue signals with appropriate rest leads to greater productivity, creativity, and overall wellbeing.
Neuroscience research has identified specific brain wave patterns during periods of rest that are crucial for memory consolidation, creative problem-solving, and emotional processing. These periods of “default mode network” activation can’t occur when we’re constantly engaged in directed attention or task-oriented thinking.
