Today’s Practice: Boundary Scripts & Communication (20 Minutes)
Step-by-Step Instructions:
- Review your boundary map from yesterday, particularly focusing on your priority boundary area.
- Identify specific boundary conversations you need to have:
- Who needs to be informed about this boundary?
- In what situations will you need to express this boundary?
- When are you most likely to feel pressure to compromise this boundary?
- Learn the four-part boundary statement structure:
- Observation: State the facts without judgment or blame
- Feeling: Express how the situation affects you
- Need: Clearly state what you need
- Request: Make a specific, actionable request
- Create scripts for expressing your priority boundary using this structure:
- Example: “I’ve noticed I’m receiving work emails at all hours (observation). I feel overwhelmed and unable to fully recharge (feeling). I need clear separation between work and personal time (need). I’m available for emails between 9am-6pm weekdays, and will respond to anything outside those hours on the next business day (request).”
- Draft additional scripts for:
- Initially setting the boundary
- Reinforcing the boundary if it’s tested
- Addressing boundary violations
- Practice delivery:
- Read your scripts aloud, focusing on calm, confident tone
- Notice any discomfort or hesitation
- Refine wording until it feels authentic and clear
