When Gratitude Feels Difficult
If you’re finding it challenging to feel grateful today—especially if you’re going through a difficult time—please know this is completely normal and okay. Gratitude is not about forcing positive feelings or denying your current experience.
Here are some gentle approaches when gratitude feels hard:
- Start extremely small: Perhaps you can appreciate the warmth of sunlight through a window, a comfortable chair, or the taste of your morning coffee.
- Notice the ordinary: The fact that your lights turn on, water comes out of the tap, or that you have access to information and connection.
- Acknowledge a small kindness: A stranger who held a door, a text from a friend, or someone who let you merge in traffic.
- Appreciate your body’s basic functions: Your heart that beats without you having to think about it, your lungs that breathe, your eyes that can read these words.
- Practice acceptance instead: If gratitude simply isn’t accessible today, that’s perfectly okay. Instead, practice accepting your current state without judgment: “This is where I am right now, and that’s okay.”
Remember, there’s no “failing” at gratitude. Even recognizing one tiny thing—or simply being willing to try this practice—is itself an act of self-love.
